History of French animation - Émile Cohl (1857-1938) created what is most likely the first animated cartoon to be drawn on paper, Fantasmagorie in 1908 - two years after Humorous Phases of Funny Faces, often cited as the first ever animated film. He died thirty years later when he accidentally set fire to his beard and died from complications due to the resulting burns.
